Isobel Mary White


Isobel Mary White, also known as Sally White, was an English-Australian anthropologist.

Life

Early life

Isobel Mary White was first born and grew up in Harrow, London. She later moved to Birmingham, and then to Cambridge. After passing a course in economics in 1933, she obtained a scholarship to travel to Canada to research lives of migrants and outworkers.

Marriage

She married scientist Michael White in 1938, and had two children during World War II.

Career

She began her interest in anthropology in the 1950s, when her husband had already been studying for many years. During the 1970s, she began to study people living in Australia.
